My name is Amelia Gray. I'm a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. In order to protect myself from the parasitic nature of the dead, I've always held fast to the rules passed down from my father. But now a haunted police detective has entered my world and everything is changing, including the rules that have always kept me safe.

It started with the discovery of a young woman's brutalized body in an old Charleston graveyard I've been hired to restore. The clues to the killer, and to his other victims, lie in the headstone symbolism that only I can interpret. Devlin needs my help, but his ghosts shadow his every move, feeding off his warmth, sustaining their presence with his energy. To warn him would be to invite them into my life. I've vowed to keep my distance, but the pull of his magnetism grows ever stronger even as the symbols lead me closer to the killer and to the gossamer veil that separates this world from the next.

I read The Restorer when it first came out but now, I can’t recall any of the story; so I thought a re-read was in order. The Restorer is part ghost story and part murder mystery, my two favorite things.

What I loved about The Restorer is that it took place in beautiful graveyards. Amelia, our heroine restores them for a living. She lived a quiet life of solitude and normally keeps everyone at bay as her father taught…until a body turns up in a graveyard she worked in. With Amelia’s expertise, she is called in to be a consultant on the murder investigation. But as more bodies are discovered, Amelia realizes that she’s in over her head, and two bodies may be a coincidence but three is a pattern. It is up to Amelia and Detective Devlin to find the killer before more bodies turn up dead.

The Restorer is one creepy novel and I can’t imagine it being set anywhere but the south. Charleston was the perfect setting for it. A city with plenty of rich history…and one I hope visit one day! Stevens definitely kept me on my toes as we tried to figure out who the killer was and their motives. And when both questions got answer I was quite surprised because I didn’t expect said person. So kudos for that! My only complaints was the reveal was literally in the last two chapters and everything was resolved quickly thereafter. I felt the plot/mystery was a tad too drawn out.

Amelia was Amelia. I liked her well enough as a lead but didn’t find her all that special or interesting. And as I mentioned before Amelia lived a quiet life and did everything by the books. However, that all went down the drain when she’s pulled into the investigation and gets a bi too obsessed with Devlin. I say obsessed because there wasn’t a moment that went by that she wasn’t talking or daydreaming about Devlin. It got to the point of distracting and annoying. As for Devlin, he was a walking enigma but one I didn’t care to decipher. I found their chemistry unbelievable and had a hard time connecting with both characters, which made it hard to invest into the story itself. It was a good plot and all but I never feel immersed in it or invested in the characters or the overall outcome of the book. Which is unfortunate because I remembered loving it when I first read it.

The Restorer is a good ghost mystery but I don’t think I’d be continuing with the series.

When their coup of Metzger's Menagerie is discovered, Delilah and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of "exotic wildlife." Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle's owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price.

But Vandekamp's closely guarded client list isn't the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light.

I had the pleasure of reading Menagerie last year and absolutely fell in love with Vincent’s new series. It was one of my top novels of 2016. I honestly wasn’t sure if Spectacle could out do the last book. I knew Vincent wasn’t going to make life any easier for Delilah and the Metzger crew, but never in a millions years did I expect what was going to happen in Spectacle. It had everything that I loved in the first book and so much more. I was blown away by Vincent’s writing and storytelling, she certainly out did herself. No sophomore slump here!

Spectacle takes place approximately a month after the events of the first book. Delilah and the other cryptids are somewhat free now after hijacking the menagerie. The traveling show is still making it’s engagement from city to city but little do the humans know that the cryptids are really running the shows. Until a rival cryptid dealer found out the truth about Metzger’s Menagerie. Delilah and her cryptid friends found themselves locked-up once again and at the mercy of The Savage Spectacle’s owner, Vandekamp. Spectacle was as gruesome, horrifying and unimaginably crueler than its predecessor and this time around we saw a different kind of abuse. Menagerie was all about physical, bodily abuse and the endurance of an individual. We saw that again, but this time it was all about the the psyche. Showing us that abuse, torture and imprisonment could take on many forms; and doesn’t necessarily mean chains, whips, or starvation.

Spectacle and the series as a whole is not for the faint of heart. This book is brutal. The things done to the characters are pure evil and disgusting. There are some pretty horrific descriptions of what happens to the characters in the book. But Vincent’s storytelling isn’t all about brutality. It’s about rising up and breaking the metaphorical chains. It’s about people/species as one, the ‘underdogs’ fighting for equal rights and their freedom. The humans in Vincent's world see the cryptids as nothing but barbaric monsters, but again we see that appearances, the species they’re born into doesn’t define them or make them inherently good or evil. It’s the choices one make. And that sometimes the real monsters are not what you’d picture with sharp fangs and claws. Vincent also paints a terrifying picture of a different type of torture. In Spectacle, Vandekamp uses high-tech collars to control the cryptids. He could immobilize, silence them and induce pain with a touch of a button. Slowly taking away their free will and their will to fight. I honestly didn’t think anything could be worst than Metzger, but a cage is a cage no matter how shiny and pretty it looked.

If you love dark Speculative Fiction, then read this series. If you want a thought-provoking story, read this series. If you want to read one of 2017 must read novels, then read this series. This series, needs to be read in order, so I suggest starting with Menagerie. Spectacle exceeded all of my expectations and I thought the sequel was even better than the last book. I loved Spectacle! It was unputdownable and had me constantly on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for the third book, especially with the little revelation at the end. I was super happy about it! Someone needs to acquire this series for TV/movie rights stat!

You’re not going to die today.

Kayla repeated her prayer as the boarding call for her flight at Buffalo Niagara International Airport was announced.
Her thoughts raced as she clutched her boarding pass and ID while inching through the line to Gate 20.
After the gate agent had cleared her, Kayla felt Logan’s reassuring hand on her shoulder as they walked along the jetway to their plane.

“You’re gonna be fine,” he said.

She offered him a weak smile. Drawing on the advice she’d absorbed from her motivational books and recordings,
she fought her fear of flying by repeating her mantra.

I can do this. I’ve faced worse.

The jet was a new-model regional aircraft with eighty-six passenger seats, and today’s flight was full.
Their seats were in the fourteenth row on the left side. Logan took the aisle. Kayla took the window.

After they’d stowed their bags overhead Kayla buckled her belt and continued battling her anxiety by attacking her scariest thoughts.
This plane is not going to crash. I’m safe. My boyfriend’s with me.
Logan took her hand in his and tried to calm her.

The jet’s door was shut and locked. The attendants ensured the overhead bin doors were closed
and seats and trays were up as the plane pushed back from the gate.
The cabin lights flickered as the engines came on and the plane taxied out.
“Logan, the wings are bouncing.”

“It’s okay. They’re built to flex like that. It’s normal.”
As the attendants gave safety demonstrations about seat belts,
flotation devices and emergency exits, for use “in the unlikely event…”

Kayla heard the hydraulic moan of the flaps as they were adjusted by the pilot.
The plane turned then stopped for several moments.
As the engines whined louder another chime sounded.
“Attendants, prepare for takeoff.”

The knot in Kayla’s stomach tightened as the plane began rolling down the runway,
slowly at first, gaining speed then accelerating faster, the ground blurring beneath them.
Kayla struggled to control her breathing as the jet’s nose rose before she heard a thud
when the weight lifted from the landing gear and the plane left the ground.
The thrust was overwhelming as the force of the climb pushed her into her seat.
Kayla heard the groan and bump of the landing gear’s retraction.
She squeezed Logan’s hand, shutting her eyes for a moment.
Somehow, she found the strength to peek down at the earth,
the expressways, buildings and suburbs rapidly shrinking below.

I can do this. I can do this.

As the plane leveled off, Kayla took a deep breath to calm herself, and the flight attendant
made a series of announcements about keeping seat belts fastened, using electronic devices and
the upcoming in-flight refreshment service.
Not long after they’d received their drinks there was another announcement.

“This is Captain Raymond Matson with First Officer Roger Anderson.
On behalf of our entire crew, welcome aboard EastCloud Flight Forty-nine Ninety.
Very shortly we’ll reach our cruising altitude of twenty-seven thousand feet.
Everything’s looking good. We have no weather ahead of us and no traffic jams at LaGuardia,
so we expect a very smooth flight arriving on time.
We should have you in New York at the gate in about an hour and ten minutes.”
“There you go,” Logan said. “It’ll be over before you know it.”

Kayla nodded and sipped her drink.

“Hey, smile,” he said, pointing his phone at her. “I’m making a documentary of your first flight.”
Kayla waved.

“I’m really doing it. I’m flying. I’m nervous but I’m doing it.”

Then she turned to her window to take in the view below.

“It’s so pretty down there. Where are we?”

“I think we’re over the Catskill Mountains,” Logan said.

“Oh, I’ve got to take a picture.”

Kayla held up her phone to the window but it flew from her hand and her seat belt cut deep into her as the plane suddenly rolled hard,
the right wing tipping toward the ground as if the jet was flipping over.
Bodies bumped over seats as people not belted were tossed to the right wall,
along with laptops, backpacks and purses amid shrieks and loud bangs as items thudded and hammered in the overhead bins.
The service trolley crashed into passengers in the right rows, spilling hot coffee and raining down cans of soda and juice.

The jet froze with its wings in a twelve-and-six-o’clock position.
Kayla clawed at Logan, locking her arms around him as people screamed, cursed and prayed.
Then the plane lurched hard to the left with the left wing pointing directly to the earth.
Again, bodies flew through the cabin, slamming against other passengers, the wall and the overhead luggage bins.
The bin doors opened and luggage tumbled like boulders along the left row.
Logan reached out to grab an older woman who’d fallen into them but she slipped from his grip as the jet suddenly rolled right until it was almost level.

Now it began dropping, banking downward, as if it would spiral out of control. Passengers yelled and screamed,
some calling out to God before the crew regained control and finally leveled the plane.

“Please, please, let this be over,” Kayla whispered through her tears.

In the aftermath, the attendants, despite being hurt and bleeding, took charge.
Even as the sounds of crying and moaning passengers filled the plane, people began helping each other.
Kayla thrust her face into Logan’s chest, slid her arms around him and sobbed,
feeling his heart beating rapidly against her face.

Logan held her tight as the jet resumed a smooth flight.

Kayla prayed for the plane to land.

Get us back on the ground! Please, God, get us back on the ground!
Her cheek twitched as something wet and warm splashed on her skin;
one drop then another. As she pulled back, she saw blood dripping down on them from the little boy
who’d been contorted into the open luggage bin above them.

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

I’ve been a long time fan of Vincent ever since I read her Shifter and Soul Screamer series. So, when I heard that she was starting up a new series, I was beyond thrilled! More so, when I read the synopsis for Menagerie that promised a dark, macabre tale wrapped in the exquisite setting of a carnival full of beasties and mythology…you definitely can’t go wrong with any of that. I kind of had an idea of what the book was going to be about, with reading the summary and early reviews from fellow readers and bloggers; but somehow I was still shocked at how very dark, brutal and bleak the world building was and how much suffering and harsh conditions the characters had to endured.

Vincent’s Menagerie series is categorized as Urban Fantasy but there was a very subtle Dystopian undertone which is represented through the quotes scattered between chapters that emphasized life before cryptids were discovered or ousted and the rules and regulations enforced thereafter. While the book is mainly about Delilah Marlow, the chapters are narrated by multiple characters in third person (Delilah’s chapters are written in first person) which gave readers different point-of-views of the same situation which I thought was interesting. I’m sure those following my blog know that I’m not a fan of multiple POVs but Vincent made it work and besides Delilah I found myself particularly fond of Gallagher and Eryx’s chapters. As I mentioned before, I’m quite familiar with Vincent’s work but Menagerie was wholly different from the style of her other series but in a good way. For authors, who ventured out and did something unlike what they’ve done before is usually a hit or miss. However, I’m happy to report that Vincent hit a home run with this first in a brand new series! I’ve always thought she was a talented writer but with Menagerie I can tell she has grown leaps and bounds in the world building/characterization department. Within the first page I was captivated by Charity, and as I got further along into the story, I found myself wrapped up into the plot and each and every single one of the characters lives’, from captive cryptids to the humans working in Metzger's Menagerie (the good ones at least).

Speaking of characters, Vincent did a wonderful job at creating such a strong, strong heroine. I loved Delilah from the moment she stepped into Metzger’s. All Urban Fantasies has a kick-ass heroine…she either has powers, knows how to fight or a combination of the two…and while Delilah is a cryptid, she never really relied on her powers (for the first half of the book she didn’t even know what she was). What made Delilah such a strong and admirable heroine is her attitude and headstrongness. The Menagerie employees tried to break her, humiliate her, taunt her, starve her, manhandled her, threaten her and never once did Delilah waiver. Delilah is probably the strongest heroine I’ve ever read in fiction, she never gave an inch and always stuck to her ground even when her fellow captives saw no signs of hope and urged Delilah to submit to their authority. On top of such an amazing female lead, are a strong male lead and an eclectic memorable cast of secondary characters. There were many familiar mythical creatures featured that we’ve all heard about such as a werewolf, shifter, oracle, mermaid, minotaur, centaur, siren…you think of it and it’s probably in here somwhere. But the thing is, Vincent put her own spin on them all…so it’s like I was reading about them for the first time! Everything just felt so new, fresh and unique! This is a hard thing to do in itself on top of writing a novel. In this day and age, where everyone is writing similar things, it’s hard to accomplish those three things and standout. But again, Vincent doesn’t have this problem and instead she excels at it.

Many reviewers made some reservations when recommending Menagerie. Yes, it’s dark. Yes, most of the book was hard to stomach. Any bad thing, you think you can inflict or happen to/on a person is probably in this book somewhere. That all might not sound so endorsing but this is a book that everyone needs to read. It’s very thought-provoking, which is rare for me in UF/Paranormal novels (since I don’t recall any past books that made me sit back and really think). Regardless at how rough the book was in the beginning there was a happy ending in there, it was a bittersweet one but there nonetheless. I highly recommend this book; and I can easily say Menagerie is in my top 5 for favorite reads of the year. Menagerie exceeded all my expectations and I am already dying to read the sequel!
