A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim

Title: A Forgery of Fate
Author: Elizabeth Lim
Genre: Fantasy
Series: N/A
Publication: June 3, 2024, 483 pages
Source: I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Truyan Saigas didn't choose to become a con artist, but after her father is lost at sea, it’s up to her to support her mother and two younger sisters. A gifted art forger, Tru has the unique ability to paint the future, but even such magic is not enough to put her family back together again, or stave off the gangsters demanding payment in blood for her mother’s gambling debts.

Left with few options, Tru agrees to a marriage contract with a mysterious dragon lord. He offers a fresh start for her mother and sisters and elusive answers about her father's disappearance, but in exchange, she must join him in his desolate undersea palace. And she must assist him in a plot to infiltrate the tyrannical Dragon King's inner circle, painting a future so treasonous, it could upend both the mortal and immortal realms. . . .

MY THOUGHTS

If you’ve ever read my reviews, you know I’m always on the lookout for an amazing and memorable Asian Fantasy. While the market is overflowing with them, I hadn’t truly found one that stuck with me...until I read A Forgery of Fate. What first piqued my interest was discovering that it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, one of my all-time favorites.

Within the first few chapters, I knew I was reading something special. Truyan Saigas, our heroine, makes her living as a painter by forging artwork from famous artists. With her father missing and her mother battling a gambling addiction, Tru does whatever it takes to provide for herself and her two younger sisters. Just when things start to look up, the local gang comes calling to collect her mother’s debts. With little time to repay them, Tru strikes a desperate deal with the Demon (Dragon) Prince: pretend to be his wife for a month and help him overthrow his grandfather. In return, Tru and her family will receive unimaginable wealth and protection until their mission is complete.

Tru is a fantastic heroine; brave, loyal, kind, and full of heart. She’s not only the kind of character you root for, but one you can truly relate to. The Dragon Prince, Elang, is a standout male lead. He initially gives off that brooding, insufferable charm we all know and love; one moment he’s driving you mad, the next he’s making you swoon. The slow-burn chemistry between Tru and the Prince is delicious, full of tension that will give you butterflies. It gave me Pride and Prejudice vibes in the best way.

The worldbuilding is easy to follow yet refreshingly unique. I especially loved that the dragon realm is set underwater. The Beauty and the Beast elements were beautifully woven in, with familiar moments acting like Easter eggs for fans of the classic tale. At the same time, the author added her own unique spin, making it feel both nostalgic and entirely new. It was a breath of fresh air. I've read many Beauty and the Beast retellings over the year, and this is by far the best one I've ever read. Whether intentional or not, the underwater kingdom and cursed aspect also gave me The Little Mermaid vibes, another favorite of mine!

Every year, there’s one book that completely surprises me—a hidden gem that exceeds all my expectations. A Forgery of Fate is that book for me this year. It’s everything I didn’t know I wanted, and I adored every moment. This was my first book by Elizabeth Lim, and it definitely won’t be my last. Her writing is magical, flowing effortlessly and pulling me deep into the story. It made me feel—which, to me, is hallmark of a truly great book.

I highly recommend A Forgery of Fate. This is one you don’t want to miss!

Revenge.

Raised to be my father’s weapon against the Coven that took away his sister and his birthright, I would do anything to protect my younger brother from suffering the same fate. My duty forces me to the secret town of Crystal Hollow and the prestigious Hollow’s Grove University―where the best and brightest of my kind learn to practice their magic free from human judgment.

There are no whispered words here. No condemnation for the blood that flows through my veins. The only animosity I face comes from the beautiful and infuriating Headmaster, Alaric Grayson Thorne, a man who despises me just as much as I loathe him and everything he stands for.

But that doesn’t mean secrets don’t threaten to tear the school in two. No one talks about the bloody massacre that forced it to close decades prior, only the opportunity it can afford to those fortunate enough to attend.

Because for the first time in fifty years, the Coven will open its wards to the Thirteen.

Thirteen promising students destined to change the world.

If the ghosts of Hollow’s Grove’s victims don’t kill them first.

MY THOUGHTS

The Coven has been on my radar for a while now, but I kept putting it off due to all the mixed reviews. However, if there's one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a sucker for dark academia, any book set in a school and I’m sold!

This is my first book by Woods, and I’m surprised to say I enjoyed it far more than I expected. From the very first page, I was hooked as Headmaster Throne is tasked with bringing in a late enrollee, Willow, to Hollow Grove University. However, Willow isn’t the untrained witch The Covenant thought she was; she’s far more powerful than anyone, Throne included, anticipated.

I really enjoyed the cat-and-mouse chase between Gray and Willow. At first, their budding relationship felt a bit odd, especially since he’s literally the Headmaster of the university. I also thought it was a bit too convenient how he was always in Willow’s orbit—didn’t he have a school to run? Still, I liked Willow for the most part. She talks the talk, walks the walk, and is unapologetically herself.

The ending was unexpected, and now I’m eager to see how this duology wraps up. The Coven was a quick, engaging read, perfect as an in-between book that doesn’t require much mental effort. It’s definitely brain candy, in the best way.

I had spent a lifetime perfecting the art of planning ahead, accounting for every known variable and a few that were mere speculation. It was necessary, to live the life I had, to do the things I had done and come out on the other side.

So by the time I arrived at the storms-forsaken Summit, I had spent every day of the years prior carefully, meticulously assessing each situation and weighing the best potential outcome, knowing that my clansmen lived and died on my ability to do it well.

In spite of that, I don’t believe there was anything in this world or the next that could have prepared me for her.

*Onyx Volume I will cover the first two books of the Lochlann Feuds series from Evander’s perspective. It is strongly encouraged for readers to wait until *after* Lochlann Feuds to read this companion novel.

MY THOUGHTS

I discovered the Lochlann Feud series earlier this year, and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. When the authors announced they were working on a companion novel from Evander's point of view, I was ecstatic! Initially, I thought we’d only get Evander’s perspective for the first book, but the authors went above and beyond, delivering his viewpoint for the entire four-book series. Onyx Cage Vol. 1 covers Evander’s experience through the first two books in the series, Scarlett Princess and Tarnished Crown.

Though it had been a few months since I last read the series, I was instantly pulled back into its world, feeling as if no time had passed. Seeing the story through Evander’s eyes added incredible depth, especially with his reactions to pivotal moments, like the first time he saw Rowan. In Tarnished Crown, Evander was absent for a significant part of the story while visiting villages, and it was fascinating to finally see what he was doing behind the scenes. I’ve loved the companion novel so far (with part 2 set to release at the end of November 2024).

However, experiencing Rowan through Evander’s perspective was a bit jarring. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Rowan, but in Onyx Cage, her immaturity and impulsiveness really stand out. She often came across as vexing and childish, especially compared to the other characters. The authors did give us a heads-up about this, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

All in all, Onyx Cage Vol. 1 is an amazing addition to the Lochlann Feud series. I’m so grateful the authors chose to write this companion novel—it added a whole new layer to the story, giving me that “first-time” reading experience all over again. If you haven’t started the Lochlann Feud series, what are you waiting for? It’s one of the best Romantasy series out there, with the perfect blend of romance, adventure, and banter. I loved every moment of it and highly recommend checking out Scarlett Princess to get started!

In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember.

But a secret is like a knot.

Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone.

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real, and Saeris has landed herself right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him… or her.

Death has a name.

It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate.

His past is murky.

His attitude stinks.

And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home.

Be careful of the deals you make, dear child.

The devil is in the details...

MY THOUGHTS

After seeing Quicksilver on my FYP for weeks, I finally took the plunge and read the book. I'm so glad I did! Like many Romance Fantasy/Fantasy series nowadays, Quicksilver features the usual fae, vampires, and gods, but it stands out with its unique and fresh take on these subjects.

I was effortlessly immersed in the world and writing within a couple of pages. The world-building is fascinating, vivid, and well-developed. While reading Quicksilver, I could easily imagine Saeris and Carrion running the third ward, and Kingfisher and Ren at the battlefronts. The magic system in Quicksilver is straightforward but complex enough without being convoluted or resorting to info-dumping. I absolutely loved all the characters. Saeris is probably one of my new favorite heroines. Imagine a petite, independent, kick-ass woman who can take down men three times her size, yet still has a big heart and a great sense of humor. Kingfisher was perfection—the kind of male lead/hero I enjoy reading about. I can't think of a single negative quality when it comes to Kingfisher. I loved their chemistry, interactions, and especially their banter. The banter was everything!

Quicksilver is very character-driven and centered. I love when an author writes fully developed, fleshed-out characters with flaws and attributes we can relate to and connect with. Whether it's a villain like Malcolm or a minor but adorable character like Archer, each character feels real.

Quicksilver is one of the best books I've read so far this year and easily in my top five reads. I loved it so much. If I could rate it more than five stars, I would. It was just that amazing. I highly, highly recommend Quicksilver if you haven't read it yet. You will not regret it! And you know what's crazy? The author mentioned that this was her first foray into the Romantasy/Fantasy genre and that she didn't have an audience for it. I was shocked to learn that because, as I mentioned earlier, the world-building is done really well. I can't wait for book 2, which comes out later this year in the fall!

Huntyr has fought for survival her entire life. Raised under Lord, the master of assassins in Midgrave, she has spent over twenty years learning to kill the blood-hungry, depraved vampyres that lurk in the darkness. Huntyr is the most lethal fae in the kingdom, which is why Lord chooses her to complete the next mission.

Huntyr must survive Moira Seminary and make it into The Golden City—the mysterious elite society of the few remaining angels and the magic fae who live in luxury with no crime, no poverty, and certainly no vampyres.

Only when she arrives at the academy, she’s forced to room with Wolf—the terrifying fallen angel who happens to know her assassin identity.

Determined to keep her head down in Moira, Huntyr tries her best to ignore Wolf. Over time, though, he not only becomes the only person she can lean on, but the one who might keep her alive through the life-threatening tests to get into The Golden City.

MY THOUGHTS

I was so excited for Wings so Wicked – it seemed right up my alley. I mean, who doesn't love a good story of opposites attracting? In this novel, we follow a Vampire Assassin and a Vampire who must set aside their differences and collaborate to gain entry into the elusive Golden City. Only a chosen few get the chance to prove their skills at Moira Seminary, a school for the gifted, and the stakes are high – it's either the Golden City or death.

Wings so Wicked started off promising. I appreciated that the action kicked in early, thrusting our main protagonist, Huntyr, into Moira where she faced grueling training and obstacles. Unfortunately, the initial excitement didn't last, and the book went downhill. The scenes became incredibly choppy and jarring, lacking smooth transitions between scenes and dialogues. Another significant issue was with the characters – the interactions and dialogues fell flat. I didn’t connect with Huntyr or Wolf, and even their interactions felt forced. It was insta-love, but not the good kind. Despite being familiar with the alpha male and stubborn female trope, this was an absolute no for me. Wolf came off as more controlling than protective, and Huntyr's tough exterior seemed inconsistent with her projection of insecurities onto others. When everything inevitably crashed and burned, she turned more self-deprecating. It was annoying.

As I reached the end of the novel, my interest dwindled, and I found myself not caring about the fate of the characters. I contemplated giving up, but I was already too deep into the book, and reaching the end felt like a relief. Personally, I cannot recommend this book and consider it a time-waster. If you're seeking a vampire-themed story with challenges, I suggest exploring The Serpent and the Wings of Night. I'm genuinely perplexed by the positive reviews and high ratings. Well, to each their own.
