Coyote shifter Mercy Thompson knows that life with her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will never be boring, but even their wedding doesn't go as planned. Nevertheless, a ten-day honeymoon camping on the banks of the Columbia River, alone, just the two of them, should make up for it. But the trip - and the pimped-out trailer they're using - is courtesy of the fae. And nothing from the fae comes without strings attached...

Being a different breed of shapeshifter - a walker - Mercy can see ghosts, but the spirit of her long-gone father has never visited her. Until now. An evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River - and innocent people are dying. As other walkers make their presence know to Mercy, she must reconnect with her heritage to exorcise the world of the legend known as the river devil...

Mercy has come a long way since the beginning from a regular mechanic to a revered member of the supernatural community. If anything happens, you can count on Mercy to save the day. In the opening of River Marked, Mercy and Adam finally get hitched and like all newly wed couples are about to jet off on their honeymoon. Except the honeymoon doesn’t go as planned with Mercy getting pulled in to investigate a murder and find herself attacked and marked by a river demon hellbent on killing her.

I very much enjoyed River Marked and loved that Briggs explored and incorporated Native American lore into the storyline. I haven’t encounter many novels with Native American Lore/Mythology, so it was a nice and welcomed change. With that said, I however, didn’t think the river demon was all that scary…Mercy has faced scarier, life threatening opponents before in my opinion. In addition to learning more about shapeshifters, we finally learn more about Mercy’s background and who her parents are…Especially her father.

All in all River Marked was a solid read, but not the best in the series. But I am still excited to see how the dynamics will change, now that Mercy is officially part of the pack now. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, I highly recommend it. The Mercy Thompson series is one of Urban Fantasy’s staple series.

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

The final Kate Daniel novel releases this year. So, I thought It’d be a good time as any to catch up on the series. I don’t know why but I’ve been holding off on reading the series for years, even though it’s my favorite series and I know it’s going to be great…and of course, it was! The sixth installment in the series takes Kate, Curran, Derek, Andrea…and a few more away from The Keep as they travel across The Black Sea to act as bodyguards to Dessandra, a shifter whom is about to give birth to twins in exchange for a cure for lupism. The gang know that it’s likely a trap, but they’re in for a rude awakening when the find out who’s in charge and things are a lot worst than it seems.

There’s A LOT that went on in Magic Rises. Kate and Curran’s relationship is tested by Curran’s former acquaintance, the other two packs has it out for Kate feeling she’s unfit to be a consort because she’s not a shifter, unknown creatures are wrecking havoc on the island, and Kate’s history and identity is at risk of being exposed. I’m sure there were more things but like I said, there’s too many things going on at once.

I’ve been following this series for almost 10 years now, and with each book it just gets better and better. The world building is complex and ever-expanding; there’s always something new to discover. And I love seeing the characters grow into their person and their relationship with one another. It crazy to see how far everyone has come. The third book in the series has been my favorite book for the longest time, but now Magic Rises takes the coveted position (but I’m pretty sure that’s going to change again when I read the next book lol). Magic Rises made me deliriously happy, annoyed, left me gobsmacked and a few more emotions I can’t reiterate.

It made me happy because, hello…it’s a Kate Daniels novel. Enough said. But really, I liked that it took place in a new location with new characters. Kate was totally bad-ass, as usual. The other packs verbally and physically attacked her and she handle everything like it was a walk in the park. She didn’t care about anyone’s opinion of her. When they voiced their doubts about her, instead of stooping to their level by arguing, Kate showed her worth by her actions which spoke volumes. Kate and Curran’s relationship was pretty close of being over at one point. For the majority of the book Curran spent his time with a former lady acquaintance as rumor flew that Kate was going to get replaced. I was annoyed that Kate actually believed it! She and Curran have been through so much together and I was surprised that she actually doubted his loyalty and love for her. And finally, to say I was shocked at the events towards the end is an understatement. There were casualties, we lost a favorite shifter! I literally gasped out loud during the dining hall scene…because all hell broke loose.

Andrews have written yet another amazing addition to the Kate Daniel Series. Magic Rises is definitely a game-changer and I can’t wait to see what happens next…I have a feeling it’s going to be big. Maybe Roland will finally make an appearance! All in all, I love this book and series, it’s one of the best Urban Fantasy out there and is still going strong after six books. Normally when authors publish four or more books in a series, things get stale, redundant, dull or some combination of all three but Andrews don’t have that issue…ever. If you want to read the best that Urban Fantasy has to offer, then you need to read this series A.S.A.P. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

It’s been almost a year since October “Toby” Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day’s sleep. She’s tried to focus on her responsibilities—training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester’s knight, and paying the bills—but she can’t help feeling like her world is crumbling around her, and her increasingly reckless behavior is beginning to worry even her staunchest supporters.

To make matters worse, Toby’s just been asked to find another missing child…only this time it’s the changeling daughter of her fellow knight, Etienne, who didn’t even know he was a father until the girl went missing. Her name is Chelsea. She’s a teleporter, like her father. She’s also the kind of changeling the old stories warn about, the ones with all the strength and none of the control. She’s opening doors that were never meant to be opened, releasing dangers that were sealed away centuries before—and there’s a good chance she could destroy Faerie if she isn’t stopped.

Now Toby must find Chelsea before time runs out, racing against an unknown deadline and through unknown worlds as she and her allies try to avert disaster. But danger is also stirring in the Court of Cats, and Tybalt may need Toby’s help with the biggest challenge he’s ever faced.

Toby thought the last year was bad. She has no idea.

It’s been three years since I read the October Daye series. I always tell myself I’d start the next book, and next thing I know I’m three books behind. Although it’s been three years, jumping back into October’s world with Ashes of Honor felt effortless; like going back home after a long vacation. It was like I never even left. Ashes of Honor is the 6th book in the October Daye series, taking place approximately a year after the events of One Salt Sea. In this installment October is still in the midst of grieving over the death of her boyfriend Connor and losing her daughter Gillian (who took the changeling choice, and chose to be human). By losing two people October loves the most she has kept everyone at arm’s length while seeking solace in being reckless with life. But life doesn’t stop when you’re feeling down, and October is yet again on another case as fellow knight Etienne seeks her help in finding his missing changeling daughter.

The mystery plot this time around isn’t as intricate as the previous plot lines in the series; this was a pretty straightforward case. Even the villain wasn’t much of a mystery as I figured out who was behind Chelsea’s kidnapping early on in the book. Although it was a straightforward case, the twist midway and involvement of the court of cats was interesting. I didn’t expect the author to tie the upheaval situation to Chelsea’s kidnappers but it was well-done nonetheless.  Readers also got to see a deeper side of faerie, places that were supposedly locked away by Oberon and more of the duchy of Tamed Lighting (April O’ Leary’s domain). McGuire never ceases to amaze me with her world building, everything is so vividly detailed that I can imagine faerie alongside San Francisco; it’s beautiful and believable.

As someone that has followed this series since the beginning, it is no surprise that October and danger come hand-in-hand.  October is a magnet for trouble. For the majority of the series October was use to doing things alone, feeling as if she can’t depend on anyone but herself. However, in this book readers see October re-evaluate her life and learn that although some people are gone that it doesn’t necessarily mean that she too should stop living; October realizes that there’s still a lot worth living for, people worth living for.  It was refreshing to see October embrace the people around her and accept the help offered to her. What I love most about October is that she’s a realistic character, dealing with real situations and emotions (well, you get what I mean). She has continuously grown with each book, still stubborn but she’s learning. October has such a big caring heart and a deep loyalty to her friends…which is why she always finds herself in sticky situation.

The usual cast of characters all gets equal page time and it makes me happy to immerse myself with October and her friends. But what is truly wonderful is we get a lot more of Tybalt…A LOT. October and Tybalt’s relationship takes a turn in this installment, and I was savoring every moment of it. I have been waiting for this book, for this moment in the series since the first book and it was definitely worth the wait. Reading Tybalt’s confession to October on how he feels about her and about his past left me heartbroken and breathless at the same time. They always had a complicated relationship from the beginning but seeing them then and now…is just wow, it’s been a long time coming. I’m very excited to see how their relationship develops in the future books.

All in all, Ashes of Honor was another stellar addition to the series. This is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series that just gets better and better with each book. The characters and the world building are amazing and there’s nothing like it on the market. No one does faeries like McGuire!

 |SUMMARY|

After her werewolf boyfriend, Johnny, tried to kill her, Persephone Alcmedi finds herself in the comforting arms of powerful vampire Menessos. She’s trying to sort out her feelings for the two men, but not even Seph is above the confusion of tangled emotions. All Johnny wants to do is mend their relationship and reveal the life-altering news he’s recently received, but his new responsibilities as the werewolf king take up most of his time.

Does this mean Menessos can finally make his move?

Meanwhile, unknown to Seph, her beloved foster daughter, Beverley, has been playing with a magical artifact and making dubious friends on the other side. When Beverley disappears, Seph must seek help from a supernatural being so potent that even Menessos fears him...and such aid always comes with a very steep price.

There were a lot of things going on in this book, and separately for that matter. In the previous book, Seph, Johnny and Menessos were always together going up against the vampires at one time, witches or the wærewolves. This time around everyone was dealing with their own personal problems.  The Diviza, region wære representative is coming into town to confirm Johnny as the Dom Loup, all while Johnny adjusts to his new role; not only as the wærewolf king but also as a father. Next we have Menessos who just stepped down as haven master after VEIN discovered he was twice marked by Seph, and he’s now in the process of transferring all his responsibilities to his successor Goliath. Finally we have Seph, who sadly cannot catch a break from everyone wanting to use her position as the ‘Lustrata’ to their personal advantage. Everything gets more hectic when Beverly; Seph’s adoptive daughter goes missing in the ley-lines. Menessos, being the powerful wizard that he is able to pull Beverly from the ley line but not without a price…since she’s not fully human (how she got in the ley line in the first place) Menessos had to ‘gift’ her …creating a ward-breaker.

Things go from bad to worse when Seph sits down for a meditation and realizes creepy is in her alternative plane. Creepy says he can help Seph escape from all her troubles and protect the people she loves all at the same time if she’s willing to agree to his price but once Seph learns his true identity…she sees he never had the intention of letting her go. The first third of the book is mostly recapping of the characters, and their progression throughout the series. The Vampire-Harpy sisters from the previous novel are still prisoners of the haven, and they cause problems when they learn of Beverly’s new ability. There wasn’t a lot of action, just two big scenes from what I can remember in the entire book but there was a lot of scheming between the characters, everyone trying to manipulate others to reach their goal. My favorite part of the entire book was the end when everyone is finally together. The scene with Seph, Johnny and Menessos in the kitchen looking out at everyone gathered around them totally made me tear up! I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to what lies ahead for the trio.
